Be a part of helping our clients through the Bike Maintenance Program at Refresh!
Our Street Outreach team works with people experiencing homelessness. Transportation is a large barrier for this community, and a lot of folks rely on bikes as a main form of getting around town. Our main goal for this program is to lower the barrier and increase accessible transportation for this community by offering free bike repairs! Bike Maintenance volunteers will be trained in common bike repairs & offer services during Refresh on Wednesday evenings. As a volunteer for this opportunity, you will work directly with the Street Outreach Team and community partner organizations to accomplish these tasks!
We are seeking consistent long-term volunteers for this opportunity, who plan on having availability to commit to 2 hours/week on a consistent basis.
General tasks this opportunity might assist with:
- Repair Refresh Guest’s bikes. Tasks will generally include: filling tires, greasing chains, reattaching slipped chains, replacing bolts, inspecting brakes, etc.
- Set up and tear down bikes repair station
- Be willing to work in a team setting
- Be available and open to learn new bike repair skills
- Attend with a positive attitude and open mind
Location:
This volunteer activity will take place during the Refresh Program at First United Methodist Church (57 W 10th Street, Holland, MI 49423). Please enter the building through Door A. An Outreach Staff member will greet you there on your first day.
Qualifications:
- This opportunity will generally be needed on Wednesday nights from 5:30PM-8PM
- Reliable, independent transportation is required.
- Volunteers must attend a bike repair training session, prior to volunteering. A Community Action House employee will contact volunteers to arrange a time to complete training prior to starting the service.
- Good verbal communication skills and be able to show respect to our neighbors
